A steam-trap survey is both an energy project and a reliability programme. Failed-open traps leak live steam; failed-closed or undersized traps retain condensate and can contribute to poor heating, corrosion and water hammer.
Three failure states to distinguish
- Failed open: continuous live-steam loss into the return, higher backpressure and wasted fuel.
- Failed closed: condensate backup, cold equipment, waterlogging and hammer risk.
- Operating incorrectly: wrong trap type, oversizing, steam locking, excessive backpressure or poor installation even though the mechanism still moves.
Why temperature alone is insufficient
A hot outlet does not prove that a trap is leaking steam; condensate can be close to steam temperature and flash after pressure reduction. A cold trap does not automatically mean failure if the equipment is unloaded. Good surveys combine operating context, upstream/downstream temperature, ultrasonic response and visual or test-station evidence.
Build a trap register
Record each trap’s unique ID, location, application, manufacturer, model, size, pressure, discharge destination, test result and corrective action. Photograph inaccessible or incorrectly piped stations. This turns individual observations into a maintainable asset programme.
Prioritise corrective work
- Safety-critical hammer and severe condensate backup
- Large failed-open traps with measurable steam loss
- Process traps affecting production quality
- Stations with blocked strainers or failed check valves
- Installation defects and missing insulation
Estimate savings carefully
Steam-loss estimates should use the trap orifice, upstream pressure, failure mode and operating hours, then be converted using the site’s actual steam-generation cost. Avoid claiming savings from nameplate capacity alone.
Keep surveys recurring
A one-time campaign captures only one operating snapshot. Testing frequency should reflect pressure, duty, trap population, failure history and economic impact. Repairs should be retested after commissioning.
