The Importance of Strainers in Steam Systems
Steam pipelines carry scale, weld slag, pipe swarf, and other debris — especially in new installations or after maintenance. This contamination damages steam trap seats, control valve trim, and PRV discs, causing premature failure and costly downtime.
Steam strainers are the simplest, most cost-effective way to protect downstream equipment. PureSys India supplies a full range of strainers & ancillaries for steam and condensate applications.
Types of Steam Strainers
Y-Type Strainers
The most common strainer type for steam and condensate. The Y-shaped body holds a perforated or wire mesh screen element. Flow passes through the screen; debris collects in the strainer pocket. Features:
- Easy in-line cleaning — the screen can be removed and cleaned without removing the strainer body
- Available in screwed and flanged end connections
- Suitable for steam, condensate, water, oil, and gas
- Screen mesh options: 0.4mm, 0.8mm, 1.6mm
Basket Strainers
For higher flow capacity and lower pressure drop than Y-strainers, basket strainers use a larger cylindrical screen element. Ideal for large-bore applications where frequent cleaning is required. The large basket volume holds more debris before requiring cleaning.
Duplex Strainers
Duplex (twin) strainers allow switching between two parallel baskets — enabling one side to be cleaned while the plant remains in service. Essential for critical continuous processes where shutting down the strainer for cleaning is not acceptable.
Where to Install Strainers
- Upstream of steam traps: Protects the trap seat and orifice from debris
- Upstream of control valves: Prevents seat and plug damage
- Upstream of PRVs: Protects the sensing and control mechanism
- Upstream of flow meters: Prevents sensor damage and fouling
- Upstream of solenoid valves: Prevents seat damage and sticking
Steam System Ancillaries
Beyond strainers, a well-designed steam system requires several ancillaries:
- Sight glasses: Visual inspection of condensate flow and quality
- Steam separators: Remove entrained water droplets from wet steam — improving steam quality
- Air vents: Automatic removal of air and non-condensable gases from steam spaces
- Vacuum breakers: Prevent vacuum formation and water hammer in steam spaces on shutdown
