Control valves are automatic valves that regulate flow rate, pressure, temperature, or liquid level in a process by varying their opening in response to a signal from a controller. Types of Control Valves
Globe Control Valves
The most common control valve type — uses a plug-and-seat design offering excellent throttling characteristics. Available in single-seated (tight shut-off) and double-seated (balanced — for high-pressure drop) configurations.
- Excellent rangeability and control accuracy
- Available with pneumatic, electric, or electro-hydraulic actuators
- Suitable for steam, water, oil, and gas
Butterfly Control Valves
Compact and economical for large pipe sizes. A rotating disc controls flow — available with characterised seats for improved control at partial opening. Popular in HVAC, water treatment, and large-bore steam applications.
Cage-Guided Control Valves
A cage surrounds the plug, providing lateral guidance and characterised flow control. The cage can be replaced to change the flow characteristic (equal percentage, linear, or quick opening) without changing the valve body.
Control Valve Actuators
- Pneumatic actuators: Most common in process industry — fast response, reliable, safe in hazardous areas
- Electric actuators: Ideal where instrument air is unavailable — precise positioning
- Electro-hydraulic: For large valves requiring high thrust force
Control Valve Selection Criteria
- Cv (flow coefficient): Must be matched to actual flow requirement
- Pressure drop: Available pressure drop across the valve
- Fluid properties: Viscosity, flashing, cavitation potential
- Process conditions: Temperature, pressure, flow range
- Shut-off class: ANSI/FCI Class IV, V, or VI required?
