Gestra Boiler Level Limiters | SIL 3 Safety Devices India – PureSys
PureSys India is an authorised supplier of Gestra boiler water level limiters in India. Level limiters are independent, dedicated boiler safety shutdown devices — completely separate from the level controller — that automatically shut down the boiler burner if the water level falls to a critically low or rises to a dangerously high point, preventing catastrophic boiler damage or explosion.
Gestra level limiters are certified to Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL 3) per IEC 61508 — the highest functional safety rating required for boiler protection systems. They comply fully with EU boiler standards EN 12952 (water-tube boilers) and EN 12953 (shell-type boilers), and are available with IBR (Indian Boiler Regulation) certification for Indian boiler plants.
Why Boiler Level Limiters are Mandatory
A boiler water level controller maintains the correct level under normal operating conditions. However, if the controller fails — due to electrode fouling, wiring fault, valve failure, or control system error — the boiler can be left without any protection against dangerous water level conditions. The level limiter is the last line of defence: an independent, fail-safe device that acts when the primary level control system cannot.
- Low water limiter — shuts down the burner if the boiler water level falls below the minimum safe level, preventing tube overheating, tube rupture and boiler explosion
- High water limiter — activates alarm and/or shutdown if the water level rises above the maximum safe level, preventing dangerous water carryover into the steam system and steam lines
Under Indian Boiler Regulations (IBR) and most international boiler safety codes, at least one independent low water level safety device is mandatory on all steam boilers. A SIL 3 certified limiter is the most reliable and compliant choice.
Gestra NRG Series — Level Limiter Electrodes
Gestra’s NRG electrode series are the sensing elements used with boiler level limiters. The electrodes use the electrical conductivity of boiler water: when the water level drops below the electrode tip, the circuit is broken and the limiter activates the burner shutdown relay.
Low Water & High Water Level Limiter Electrodes
- NRG 16-50 — Standard limiter electrode for shell-type boilers; detects the minimum water level limit. Most commonly specified for fire-tube industrial boilers in pharmaceuticals, food, textiles, and chemicals. PN 40 rated, available in multiple rod lengths
- NRG 17-50 — Enhanced sensitivity limiter electrode; suitable for low-conductivity feedwater applications where standard electrodes may be less reliable. Available in multiple lengths for different boiler drum geometries
- NRG 19-50 — Dual-function electrode combining minimum water level limiter and high-level alarm in a single unit, reducing installation cost and space requirements
- NRG 111-50 — Long-rod electrode for large boiler drums with deep water levels; suitable for large water-tube and high-capacity industrial boilers

High Level Alarm Electrodes
- NRG 16-51 — High-level alarm electrode; provides early warning before the maximum water level is reached, triggering an alarm before the emergency high-level shutdown activates. Allows the operator time to take corrective action before an automatic shutdown
- NRG 17-51 — As NRG 16-51 with enhanced sensitivity for low-conductivity water applications
- NRG 19-51 — Combined high-level alarm and maximum level limiter in a single electrode
- NRG 111-51 — Long-rod high-level alarm electrode for large boiler drums
Compact Retrofit Electrode
- NRG 16-4 — Compact electrode specifically designed for mounting in tight boiler drum spaces; ideal for retrofit applications on existing older boilers where space constraints prevent installation of standard electrodes
Key Features of Gestra Level Limiters
- SIL 3 Certified (IEC 61508) — the highest functional safety rating for boiler protection equipment; demonstrates proven reliability of less than 1 in 1,000 probability of failure on demand
- Compliant with EN 12952 and EN 12953 — meets EU boiler safety standards for level limiters; accepted by boiler inspectors and insurance engineers worldwide
- Compliant with IBR — Indian Boiler Regulation certification available; essential for legal compliance at Indian boiler plants
- Independent of level controller — completely separate circuit from the NRS level controller; provides true redundancy and independent protection
- Failsafe design — loss of electrode signal (broken wire, fouled electrode, electrode failure) causes the limiter to trip, not to pass — the inherently safe condition
- Self-monitoring — selected models continuously monitor electrode integrity and wiring continuity, providing early warning of impending electrode failure before a shutdown event occurs
- Stainless steel electrodes — durable construction for long service life in high-temperature, high-pressure boiler drum environments
- Wide compatibility — suitable for fire-tube and water-tube boilers; land and marine applications; all common industrial pressure ratings
Level Limiter vs. Level Controller — What’s the Difference?
| Feature | Level Controller (NRS) | Level Limiter (NRG) |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Maintains correct water level during normal operation | Safety shutdown when level reaches a dangerous extreme |
| Operation | Continuous modulating or on/off feedwater control | Emergency interlock — burner shutdown only |
| Circuit | Connected to feedwater valve or pump | Connected to burner safety interlock circuit |
| Independence | Primary control loop | Completely independent from controller |
| Reset | Automatic / continuous | Typically requires manual reset after investigation |
| Safety Rating | Standard control device | SIL 3 safety-rated device (IEC 61508) |
| IBR Requirement | Required for boiler operation | Mandatory safety device under IBR and EN standards |
Applications
- Fire-tube (shell) boilers — the most common boiler type in Indian industry; pharmaceuticals, food & beverage, textiles, chemicals, paper
- Water-tube boilers — power generation, process industries, refineries and petrochemical plants
- Waste heat recovery boilers — cement, steel, power, and process industries
- Hot water boilers — district heating, hospitals, and commercial heating systems
- Marine boilers — shipboard steam systems requiring level protection in motion
